Thinking about a Cal State MFT program?
Now’s the time to start preparing!

The applications at the Cal State MFT programs will open in a few months. This means you still have time to make yourself as competitive a candidate as possible!

You’ll need to:

  • Request your transcripts

  • Request letters of recommendation

  • Prepare your resumé or curriculum vitae (CV)

  • Write your essay or personal statement

And for some schools, you’ll also need to:

  • Take the GRE

  • Make a plan to take prerequisite courses

  • Get some clinical experience under your belt

Why choose a Cal State?

The MFT programs offered on various California State University (CSU, or Cal State) system campuses are some of the best deals, in my opinion. Full disclosure, I graduated from the MFT program at CSUN, but here’s how I came to this conclusion:

  • Cost
If you look at my list of estimated program tuition amounts, the Cal States are the most affordable by far, with the most expensive Cal State program ringing up at LESS THAN 1/3 the cost of the most expensive program in the state.

  • Quality
Core faculty at Cal State schools are generally held to a higher standard than other programs, with most being required to actively participate in research and publishing. In my experience, this results in a curriculum that’s responsive to current trends in the field.

  • Selectivity
Most Cal States only have one MFT program, only admit students once per year, and the largest programs only admit less than 60 students. Many admit only around 8-15! This means you and your classmates have been selectively handpicked for admission.

Of course, these circumstances also add up to the biggest downside of the Cal States…

They are the probably the most competitive MFT programs in the entire state.

My application course will teach you how to strategically approach the application process to maximize your chances of admission. I cover:

  • What grad schools are looking for in applicants

  • How to craft an Applicant Narrative, the overarching story of who you are as a candidate and who you’ll be as a mental health professional.

  • How to handle letters of recommendation and your resumé/CV

  • How to write the most important part of your application—the essay or personal statement.

This includes a sample outline for essay writing AND an example of a fully finished, polished personal statement.
